What is the IELTS Exam?
The IELTS (International English Language Testing System) is one of the world's most recognized English proficiency tests, used for study, work, and immigration. It is jointly managed by Cambridge Assessment English, the British Council, and IDP Australia. It comes in two main types: Academic – for university admission – and General Training – for work or migration. In this article we cover every aspect of the test and introduce the best free and paid resources.
IELTS Exam Structure
The IELTS test assesses four core language skills:
- Listening: 30 minutes + 10 minutes transfer time. 4 sections, 40 questions.
- Reading: 60 minutes, 3 passages with 40 questions. (Academic: more specialized texts; General: everyday topics)
- Writing: 60 minutes. Academic: describe a chart/graph (Task 1) and an essay (Task 2). General: letter writing and an essay.
- Speaking: 11–14 minutes face‑to‑face interview with an examiner. Includes introduction, speaking on a topic (cue card), and a discussion.
Scoring and Band Score
IELTS scores are reported on a scale from 0 to 9 (including half‑band increments). Your Overall Band Score is the average of the four skills. Most universities require a 6.5 or 7, but each institution sets its own minimum. Some also require a minimum score for each individual skill.

Golden Tips for Each Skill
🎧 Listening
Skim the questions before the recording starts. Pay attention to keywords and spellings. British, Australian, and American accents may appear. Practice with BBC Learning English and podcasts – it works wonders.
📖 Reading
Learn Skimming (reading quickly for main ideas) and Scanning (finding specific information). Time management is critical – spend about 20 minutes per passage. Always locate answers directly from the text.
✍️ Writing
For Academic Task 1, structure your response with an introduction, overview, and details. For Task 2, write a four‑paragraph essay (introduction, two body paragraphs, conclusion). Use a range of linking words. Study Band 9 samples.
🗣️ Speaking
Confidence and natural fluency are more important than perfect grammar. Try the Shadowing technique (repeating a recording simultaneously). See our Shadowing Technique article to learn how this method can transform your Speaking.
